Airport & Terminal Information

Bangkok is around 468 miles north of Hat Yai, with flights from Hat Yai to both of Bangkok’s airports, Suvarnabhumi Airport (BKK) and Don Mueang International Airport (DMK). The average flight duration is 1 hour 30 minutes.

Hat Yai International Airport (HDY) is a major airport serving the Songkhla Province in Southern Thailand, around 9 miles away from downtown Hat Yai. At the time of writing, 234 flights leaving Hat Yai for Bangkok weekly, with 6 airlines offering direct flights. Thai AirAsia is the most frequent airline flying from Hat Yai to Bangkok. Return flights run as cheap as US$25, and cost around US$40 on average.

By Taxi

Taxi stands are located on level 1, one level below the Arrival Hall. Licensed taxis in Bangkok are recognizable by the black-and-yellow number places. Be sure to look out for “Taxi-Meter” on the top of metered taxis to avoid overpriced fixed fares. Don’t forget to change out your THB1000 notes to THB20, THB50 and THB100 notes. This makes paying the taxi driver much easier. Taxis to get downtown usually cost between THB250 – THB400. We highly recommend paying a bit more to take the tollway to avoid getting stuck in hours of heavy traffic. “Kuen ton-way” is a useful phrase to tell your driver to use the tollway.

Airport Rail Link

The cheapest and quickest way to get to central Bangkok is to take the Airport Rail Link. You may purchase your tickets at the rail link station for THB45. Rail link trains depart daily, every 10-15 minutes, from 05:00 to midnight. Stop at Makkasan or Phaya Thai stations to connect to the MRT and BTS systems respectively. The Airport Rail Link tends to get extremely busy, and connecting stations can be quite a walk. Consider leaving the airport this way if you’re traveling light.

Leaving Don Mueang International Airport (DMK)

By Taxi

Taxi stands are located at exit #8 at the Arrival Hall. There’ll be desks at the exit that will assign you taxis according to your destination. Be sure to avoid anyone coming up to you offering taxi services, they’re likely overcharging, unlicensed drivers. Taxis from Don Mueang International Airport (DMK) to central Bangkok will cost between THB350 – THB500. Choosing to pay a bit more to use the tollway will help you get downtown a lot quicker. Just remember to make sure the driver uses the meter to avoid overpriced flat fares.

By Bus

Bus A1 runs between Don Mueang International Airport (DMK) and Mo Chit BTS station daily, between 08:30 – 23:30, and cost THB30. The Bus A1 stops at exit #6 on the ground floor of Terminal 1, and exits #12 – #14 on the ground floor of Terminal 2. It takes between 30 – 40 minutes to reach exit #4 of Mo Chit BTS station. From there, you may enter the BTS station to get to the closest stop of your desired destination. BTS SkyTrain tickets cost between THB40 – THB60.

Alternatively, you may leave both Suvarnabhumi Airport (BKK) and Don Mueang International Airport (DMK) to get to your destination via the Grab app. The prices will be similar to the airport metered taxis, with the option to go cashless.

Best Time to Visit Bangkok

Weather

Bangkok is hot and humid year-round, with its “cold” season lasting from November to February. The period between March – May is the hottest. Bangkok’s monsoon season starts in May and ends in October, so it could be the best time to visit if you’re avoiding peak season. Hotels and attractions are more likely to have deals during this period too.
