I stayed at the Dayin International Hostel during two trips to Shanghai, and I truly loved my experience both times. The staff is welcoming (Lu, Qi, Zhang), and I met wonderful travelers from all around the world. The rooms are spacious enough, comfortable, and equipped with lockers. There’s also the option to buy drinks, and excellent films are shown in the evenings.
The bathrooms are always clean, and despite its central location, the hostel has a calm and relaxing atmosphere - I slept very well. It’s also conveniently located near the subway and several supermarkets.
I highly recommend this hostel to anyone visiting Shanghai.

This is a good hostel I've stayed at in Shanghai. Each room has its own en-suite bathroom with a shower and hairdryer. There's a curtain for wet/dry separation, and while it's not as good as a glass door, it helps reduce water splashing. The toilet is relatively quiet, and the bathroom door offers good sound insulation and locks securely. The mirror above the sink has a light, which is great for quiet use at night. The bathroom's ceiling light is connected to the exhaust fan, which can be a bit noisy, but compared to some other hostels, they've clearly put a lot of thought into it. They even seem to provide toilet paper! To ensure quietness, there are three additional private bathrooms outside the rooms, also with wet/dry separation and hairdryers.
There's a common lounge area, convenient for eating and using a computer, though it's not huge, which is understandable given its prime location in downtown Shanghai. There are coin-operated washing machines and dryers, located outside so they shouldn't be noisy. The front desk offers free laundry detergent. The drying area nearby is a bit crowded and doesn't get much sun. There's a direct-drinking water dispenser next to the laundry area.
Upon entering the room, you're required to change into slippers, which helps keep out dust and odors. The beds have pre-sanitized and bagged sheets and duvet covers. Each bed comes with a lockable locker and a clothes hanger. The room hygiene genuinely seems cleaner than typical hostels. The location on Guangdong Road is excellent, with convenient transportation.
My main gripe, which is common in hostels, is the sheer number of people. In an 8-person room, some people were still on the phone past 11 PM, others checked in at 3 AM, and some started doing their makeup at 6 AM, leading to constant noise and disturbance.

One of the first reasons for selecting this hostel was the location and price alone! It is located in a very central part of Shanghai. It’s a busy street but located in walking distance of trains, many local restaurants and a short DiDi ride to main attractions.
The service is great! Quick, easy and efficient check-in process. The desk staff were great in communicating expectations and the area to lead me.
The bathroom areas are clean, showers within the areas. Blow dryers and sink amenities are present.
I enjoyed my nights rest due to the comfort of the bed and linens provided.

My three night stay at the youth hostel was very pleasant. There were three breakfast options (one vegetarian) and a cozy lounge were you could meet other travelers. Unfortunately, it was not very social or this wasn’t the „vibe“ there and they had no social connecting event.
Still the cabinets were also cozy and I had a locker in the room for my luggage. Also the female bathroom was very clean. Somehow felt private. You could get free drinkable hot and cold water in the lobby.
All in all, I would recommend the place to someone who wants to have a clean place for themselves on low budget travel but maybe not too much for connecting with a lot of people. I was lucky and met some cool people but it is not too social. The two people at the reception were really kind though and helped with recommendations of places!
In the end you could take a polaroid picture which gave it a personal note :)

《In a Shanghai Hostel, I Met the World》
I originally just came to Shanghai to apply for my UK visa.
It should have been a simple trip – stay one night, get things done, and leave. But sometimes, fate gently pulls you in unexpected places, like this hostel called Hi Cozy. Like many traveler's transit points, it's nestled in the bustling fabric of Shanghai, and its reviews often mention the friendly staff, comfortable common areas, and an atmosphere that easily sparks conversations among strangers.
What truly made me stay, wasn't the bed, the price, or even the seemingly 'worthwhile' facilities, but the people here.
There were two girls at the front desk, Melody and Lindsay. Melody was full of smiles, like a bright breeze, instantly putting you at ease. She wasn't overly enthusiastic; her smile felt more like an innate kindness, as if just by arriving here, your day couldn't be too bad. Lindsay, on the other hand, had a different kind of gentleness. She might send you on an extra errand, but she was never perfunctory; instead, she'd genuinely look after you, remind you, and consider your needs. They made me realize that the most precious thing about traveling isn't being 'served,' but being treated as a real person.
The common room was always buzzing with people.
Someone would be writing in the guestbook, noting down their country, their name, or simply drawing a simplified Oriental Pearl Tower. Those words were light, like footprints drifting on paper, yet surprisingly real. You'd suddenly realize that the world isn't far away; it's right there in these books, by a table, in a stumbling but sincere greeting.
Here, I met Stefano from Italy and Yana from Russia. We played darts together; it was her first time, but she played like a pro. There was also a Russian man who chatted with us while playing chess, as if different languages, different backgrounds, and different lives were all unfolding slowly on the same table. Hao Hao from Hong Kong and I clicked instantly; we'd lose track of time talking, feeling like we'd known each other forever. Later, I met friends from Canada and Germany. Everyone looked different, but sitting together, it felt like we all belonged to the same night.
Holi, Wimi, Ethan, and 27 – we went for late-night snacks. It was just a very late meal, but it felt like we were catching up on all the unspoken words of the day. That night, we talked about so much – travel, the future, that indescribable void in everyone's heart. By the end, even the night seemed quiet. It was a strange feeling; we'd known each other for such a short time, yet it felt like we'd walked the same path for ages. The next day, I went out with Holi, Wimi, and Ethan again, carrying the warmth of the previous night into the day. Holi even treated me to an expensive hotpot that I would have hesitated to buy myself. That hotpot wasn't just delicious; it felt like a very earnest and gentle act of care. She truly felt like an older sister, not just someone who bought me a meal, but a sudden sense of stability in a foreign land, making me feel gently embraced.
That night, we talked about futures that sounded like jokes but were deeply serious in everyone's hearts. It was 4 AM. The lights were still on in the common room, and Melody was working alone at the front desk. In that moment, I suddenly understood that the most precious part of travel isn't how many sights you see, but that on some unexpected night, with a group of newly met people, you lay bare the softest parts of your heart and realize you're not so alone after all.
I always thought travel was just going from one place to another. But this time, I learned that true travel is suddenly encountering a group of young people in a strange city who, like you, are still passionate about life. We're all a bit confused about the future, but we're still willing to believe in tomorrow and in becoming better people. And because of that, every word that night felt like a rehearsal for the future.
When I left, I felt a deep reluctance.
I had only come to Shanghai for business, but in the end, I took away a memory more important than the business itself. It wasn't a photo, a social media post, or a simple 'I was here.' It was a very specific feeling: of being embraced, understood, and gently cared for by a group of strangers from all over the world.
Later, I realized that some places aren't just somewhere to stay for a night. At some point, they quietly become a part of your life.
And Hi Cozy, for me, is just such a place. If I have the chance, I'll make a special trip to stay there again.

I chose Dunba Hostel for my business trip to Shanghai, and its location is fantastic. You can walk to the Bund, and public transport is very convenient. The 8-bed male dorm with an en-suite bathroom was a huge plus. The beds were clean and tidy, and the facilities were new and practical. The service was also very thoughtful. Overall, the experience far exceeded my expectations, and it offers great value for money. I highly recommend it to anyone coming to Shanghai for business.

The front desk staff (a lady) was very kind and helpful. I didn't sleep well on the first night, and she immediately helped me switch rooms. Roommates are always a roll of the dice, but my second, third, and fourth nights were great; all the young people there were very considerate. The hostel also has a rule about keeping noise down after 11 PM. If you come back late after 12 AM, you can use your key card to get in. I met new friends, and who knows, maybe we'll even work out or have meals together in the future. As an introvert, I still felt I had plenty of personal space. I could read in the common areas, eat at the small tables, and there were evening activities like movie screenings, and occasionally a game of Werewolf.
Hygiene: The staff cleans daily, so it's very clean and hygienic.
Environment: Quiet at night.
Service: Very attentive service.
Facilities: Facilities are well-maintained and complete.

The room was so tiny that two people could not really do something together. The space for luggage is way too less. The bathroom was already wet as the water from the curtain was dropping to the floor because the curtain was not in the correct position. The same applies for the curtains on the bed. Didn‘t really cover so the light woke me up. The matress is like the most chinese hostels thin and uncomfortable. The kitchen is a total mess and not clean. There are mostly peole living there rather than a hostel I guess. Couldn‘t connect with someone.
I chose this hostel on Madang Road because it was close to where I needed to be. This was my first time staying in a hostel, and it exceeded my expectations. There were four people in our six-bed dorm that night. The beds were sturdy, clean, and tidy, with no wobbling at all. Each bed had a curtain for privacy. The bedding (duvet cover and sheets) was clean and neatly folded, and you had to make your own bed. Everyone also had a locker that could be opened with their room card. The common areas were very quiet with a great atmosphere, and the washing areas were clean. Showers were in individual stalls.

Extremely satisfied with my hostel stay! The location is absolutely perfect, right next to Nanjing Road Pedestrian Street, making it super convenient for shopping and sightseeing. You can walk to all the major commercial areas without any hassle. The room conditions far exceeded my expectations; it had its own window, providing great natural light and ventilation, so there was no unpleasant odor inside. Everything was spotlessly clean, the bed was tidy, and items were neatly arranged, making for a very comfortable stay. My dorm mates were all very friendly, and we got along well, creating a great atmosphere. I especially want to praise the two ladies at the front desk – their attitude was incredibly gentle and enthusiastic. They patiently answered questions about directions and lent out items, and were always quick to help with any needs, showing great thoughtfulness and care. This place offers excellent value for money, perfect for both solo travelers and groups. I'll definitely choose this hostel again next time I'm in Shanghai. I truly recommend it to everyone!

GGuest UserThe隐 (Hidden) Youth Hostel is right by the Exit of Metro Line 9, with Tianzifang and SML Center shopping mall nearby, making it super convenient for getting around and finding food. I heard it just opened recently, so it's clean and tidy with no strange smells. You get fresh sheets and duvet covers to put on yourself, which is reassuringly hygienic. Most of the guests are young people, and there are even some foreigners! The front desk staff, especially Xiao Jing, the handsome guy with long hair, and Xiao Lü, the handsome guy with glasses who speaks excellent English, are both really friendly and lovely. This was my first time staying at a youth hostel, and it was a great experience. I'll definitely be back!
AAnonymous User# Stayed in a hostel with weird roommates who clearly missed basic civic lessons in elementary school.
The decor in the common areas on the 1st and 2nd floors is quite interesting. On the street level, there's a small outdoor garden, and a separate entrance for delivery drivers directly to the 2nd-floor staircase. The main entrance, however, leads to the front desk first, then an elevator.
The second floor offers independent tables and chairs for two, large long tables for groups, and comfy bean bag chairs with small coffee tables. There's also a large-screen TV available.
**Environment:**
1. **Convenient Transportation:** It's near Exit 6 of Cao Yang Road Station (Metro Line 3) and Exit 3 of Feng Qiao Station (Metro Line 11). I recommend using Feng Qiao Station as it's closer and you don't have to cross a major road. There are also several bus stops nearby.
2. **Easy to Find:** Located right by the road.
3. **Amenities:** There's a medium-sized supermarket at the intersection, making it very convenient for daily necessities. And of course, plenty of dining options! You can find Northeastern cuisine, local Shanghainese dishes, and a bit further, there are even community canteens for seniors and restaurants serving rice with stewed pork ribs soup.
4. **Room Features:** The four-person sunroom is very well-ventilated and airy.
**Hygiene:** The cleanliness of the common areas was consistently good, just like my last stay, maintaining tidiness from morning till night. However, this time in the same four-person room, my roommates had extremely poor living habits and didn't adhere to the dorm rules we signed upon check-in. Roommate #3, a young guy, constantly ordered takeout and ate it in bed, then left the used disposable tableware and drink cups next to the trash can. Roommate #4, another young person who clearly lacked basic moral education, would throw used tissues from the upper bunk onto the floor in the common aisle below after using the toilet. They didn't forget to toss disposable gloves 🧤 along with them. They also placed their small personal suitcase right in front of the cabinet for suitcase #1, completely disregarding how others would access their lockers. Plus, they had a very bizarre habit of hanging socks on the curtain rod and wouldn't allow the curtains to be closed at night. After I closed them, they'd pull them open again. Seriously, aren't they worried about residents in the opposite building seeing them in their pajamas at night?
**Facilities:**
The bed and bedding in the room this time were excellent. However, the toilet seat was broken, and the drain was clogged. The water drained extremely slowly during showers, leaving my feet standing in water. And when my roommate showered, they left the entire common aisle in the room flooded.
**Service:** As soon as I reported the drainage issue to the front desk via WeChat, a staff member quickly came with a plunger to clear it. That was excellent.
AAnonymous UserOverall, the hostel was good — well located, clean, well maintained, and comfortable. It also offers some useful facilities such as a fridge, microwave, and sink, which was convenient.
However, the common areas were often extremely crowded, especially on weekends, making it difficult to find a place to sit or relax.
The bathrooms also tended to be very busy, particularly in the mornings and evenings. Although there were many sinks available, it was still often crowded. The cleaner clearly made a big effort to keep everything clean, but the bathroom still smells a bit like urine, which was uncomfortable. Despite the frequent cleaning, I feel the bathrooms occasionally need a deeper wash.
The reception staff could also be a bit more welcoming.

BBlackeyedsamuraiBooked this hotel last minute, cause my favorite hotel is closing down business this month and i wanted something nearer cause I’m well versed with the surrounding areas, 1: the first red flag is the reception, mail and deliveries are all piled up and falling off shelves, it’s so dirty and humid, it looks like a hoarder’s poach, they’re no waiting chairs, so you’ll stand while they process the guests that came before you until it’s your turn !! The receptionists are very nice and helpful .
2; no room housekeeping ( you’ll have to ask for someone to come take the rubbish and give you towels or change your bedding.
3: THE FILTH!!! The filth is on level 1000/100 the grime made it hard for me to shower with my eyes open, I’m not sure if the place has a manager and if they care about the the wellbeing of the clients , because from what i saw, the cleaners don’t even bother, the floor had food stains from i think when they just opened, the sink🤮 the bathroom ( that one corner gave me the hibbigibeis) the toilet seat was broken
, everything in the bathroom was broken and dirty , then my charger fell in the space which is between the bathroom glass and the bed, got down to retrieve it and i decided it was best to just a get a new charger instead.
The place if cleaned and cared for would be an amazing hotel apartment, it has great amenities , a washing machine a fridge and a drying rack if you upgrade to a bigger room, a kitchenette that would be great if you are interested in cooking and staying longer and it’ has an Aldi downstairs, a gym and lots of other great places surrounding it . I really hope the owners would read this and take it into consideration and carry out serious supervision or else their property will lose value, The hygiene of the hotel does not only ensure the health and wellness of the visitors who sleep in those walls but also keeps the property value up. Dirt And filth only brings it down and puts the health of others at risk . I really hope they change standards.
