We recently booked a function room at Newtown Plaza Hotel for my mother’s 60th birthday celebration. The initial inquiry process was smooth; the events staff replied immediately and shared the packages in detail. However, as the booking process progressed, it became increasingly challenging to get a timely response from the hotel. Important information requests often took days to be answered, which was frustrating given my extensive background in event planning and customer service. One of the significant disappointments was the lack of a provided event layout. The staff informed me that they do not offer layouts and instead follow the guest's layout and guests should send one. Additionally, there was no proactive communication regarding the final detailing of the event, which required me to take the initiative. I couldn’t help but wonder how other guests with less experience manage in such situations. When I met the events executive in person, she was pleasant and professional, which reassured me somewhat. I hoped that the event day would run more smoothly. On the day of the event, the events executive was absent (but she said she’ll meet me even if its a Sunday), and I was not introduced to the banquet captain or supervisor in charge. This lack of handover was problematic. Moreover, the function room lobby was uncomfortably hot due to the absence of windows and air conditioning. Additionally, the events staff did not check in on us throughout the event. I understand it was a Sunday, but a quick call to ensure everything was going smoothly would have been appreciated. Despite these issues, the layout we provided was followed correctly, and the hotel kindly lent us a laptop when I had trouble connecting my MacBook. I also appreciated how they adjusted our welcome signage to fit their digital and directional signs. Dinner service was another letdown. Despite informing the hotel that service time was 7:15 pm with plated service for the VIP table, the service was notably slow. The VIP table had not received their main course by the time other guests had started on the buffet, prompting them to join the buffet queue. Drink service was inadequate, with slow water refills and no proactive distribution of the promised round of drinks. To add to the frustration, I discovered that some banquet staff and waiters were taking photos at our photobooth, potentially contributing to the slow service. After a call to the events executive to address these concerns, service improved slightly, with waiters arriving to serve water. I have photos of this but decided not to post it. The food quality was mixed. While the cordon bleu, lechon, and beef burgundy were delicious, other items like the canapés, pumpkin soup, and sweet and sour fish were disappointing. The family suite we stayed in was a highlight: spacious, clean, with air conditioning, two bathrooms, and great views. The bell service was efficient and helpful with our belongings.
