The Castle Hotel

The management of this place are clearly struggling but it is disappointing that they continue to choose to subject their hard-working, unwitting, customers to such a horrible experience. The place was deserted, we never saw a single member of staff the entire time we were there. Our room decor was not finished and it was not clean - dust everywhere and shavings on the sink. Beds were really uncomfortable. What a way to ruin a few precious days away with our family. If we hadn't been so tired, we'd have turned and run!!

This place is awful and I would avoid at all costs. The room was filthy, black mould in bathroom and on shower curtain, hairs and dirt in the bath and cobwebs and layers of dust on furniture. We left at 6.30am and avoided breakfast due to the state of the place, we certainly weren't going to eat there. There was no lounge to use and we avoided the bar area which consisted of a couple of seats and the bar. There was a very tight staircase up to the rooms and I would question the fire safety of the place. Doors between floors were propped open with a fire extinguisher. This place is certainly not as described or as in photos.

While the description says fully refurbished, it actually needs a full refurbishment it is a very grubby and tired 'hotel'. other guests had similar to say we met at breakfast. The staff were friendly but seriously no one wants to stay here and pay it's ridiculous.

Do not stay at this hotel. Photos on-line do not reflect the deplorable state of this hotel. Arrived to check in about 3.30. Bedrooms were dirty, linen was thin, pillow cases revealed stained pillows, bedroom floor, bathroom floor and shower floor not clean. Dining area with plastic table cloths had leftover meals still not cleared, other tables not clean, rubbish left around the self-service breakfast area. Adjacent room had a folding screen which, when a staff member did show up, revealed a large pile of what appeared to be dirty white laundry. We also noted there was no alternate fire escape - just the narrow staircase used to access the bedrooms! We checked out immediately. Having a 7-day advance cancellation policy we were already charged. No apology received, just a "Cancellation" email. No correspondence received. No refund received.

The ‘family room’ was dirty, damp, smelled awful (damp and excessive use of air freshener to try and cover that up) and was generally in poor condition. It was dangerous for children to be in (trailing electrical wires everywhere, unfinished surfaces with splinters, filthy plugs in sockets right by the single beds). There were two bright green safety lights in the room that couldn't be switched off and totally illuminated the room all night. The paper thin curtains were insufficient to block out the security light that came on every few minutes throughout the night too. The beds were uncomfortable and everywhere was unclean. Mouldy bare wood panels and unfinished decor throughout. Water damage and mould in the bathroom. Wholly unacceptable, especially for the £140 charged for one night. After 10 mins of waiting in and empty bar on arrival, someone came to show us to our room, but there were no staff around at the self serve breakfast at all and no one to even give the key back to (and report all this to) on departure.

This is honestly the worst hotel I have ever stayed in. Avoid! Dirty, old, mouldy and expensive (£10 for a glass of wine and £1 for a lemonade top up!). My colleagues and couldn’t stop laughing at the calamity of the place. Fawlty Towers seriously has nothing on this place. The staff were pleasant though and well done to the young guy serving at dinner who did his best. My advice stay a million miles away
