Just returned from our second visit to the Bonamar, and the first since the pandemic. First, the positives: The hotel is in a great location and the staff are very friendly and helpful. However, since our last visit we noticed a definite decline in quality. Lots of niggly things that a 4* hotel really should be on top of. The double glazing in one of our patio windows was shot and the window was misted over. Surely this should have been replaced during the winter closure? Someone had also snapped off the window catch meaning we had to use the end of a teaspoon to push the catch to open the window. We had problems with the water flow – the shower ran cold in all of the rooms on our floor one evening, and we regularly had issues with it just trickling out of the shower head rather than flowing. Our sheets also weren’t changed as often as was promised. The main staircase has a coffee coloured carpet on it, which looks worn and dirty and not befitting of a 4* hotel. It only appeared to get vacuumed once a week too, and was often covered in bits of cotton, glitter etc. The Dining Room was very hit and miss. A lot of the produce is of poorer quality than before, presumably to save money, and despite dressing up the evening dinner dishes with fancy names, most of the food was fairly bland. Cornflakes/Special K, pretty much a staple one would think, only appeared for breakfast every day or so, not every day. There are two coffee machines in the Dining Room and when we arrived, one of them was out of order so everyone used the other. A few days later that too broke down and the staff were rushing about getting tiny kettles that would hold about 2 cups of water, to try and provide hot water for drinks. They then fixed the first machine that was originally out of order, but left the one that had later broken down out of order. The safe and fridge are both extra charges to hire, which in a 4* hotel should not be the case. Along with the “Hotel Tax” you are now obliged to pay, it puts quite an additional sum onto your holiday cost. We used the indoor pool a few days into our holiday but, when we went down a few days later, to use it again, we found the door locked. On asking at reception if it was open, we were told that “The indoor pool is closed in June”. Having already used it “in June” we were somewhat bemused. Surely if the hotel is open for business then ALL of it should be open? We couldn’t think of a logical reason for it to be closed, unless it’s because they don’t want to have to be bothered to clean it. My husband also went to use some of the gym equipment, to find that that too is in need of some TLC. Pedal straps broken on the exercise bike, the running machine not functioning because the key appeared to have been taken off the string attaching it to the machine, and all of the equipment sounded like it needed a good dose of oil as it all squeaked and groaned. Even though the “rules” sheet you are given when you arrive,
