We went to Dawlish for a long weekend without the car. This hotel is perfectly and beautifully situated. The room we had overlooks the main Exeter to West of England railway line along the sea wall and the sea itself with a small access road in between. We travelled from home in Sussex by train to Dawlish station from where the hotel is about a three minute walk. There are shops nearby and restaurants too, though limited choice of opening when we were there in the last days of October. Not to worry though, there’s easy access to Teignmouth with a larger choice of restaurants and shops. Teignmouth is only a five minute train ride away and regular trains throughout the day and late into the evening. There are plenty of trains to Exeter St.David’s taking around 12-15 minutes as well as the opportunity to travel by train up and down both sides of the River Exe on one train all the way to Exemouth. And finally there are direct trains to Exeter Central (for the town centre) and to Plymouth. Our room was large with a window overlooking central Dawlish and the station and the huge French windows onto the balcony with the railway and sea view. For a Rail Enthusiast such as myself, the room is perfect for getting photographs and videos of trains travelling to and from the West Country. There’s a little kitchenette area in the room where it’s possible to prepare light meals with the use of a microwave, it’s also has a fridge. The double bed is large and very comfortable. We slept well. The staff are wonderful, so friendly, very helpful and courteous. And for us, they went out of their way to help us with a planned day out. We wanted to travel down to Penzance on the train and intended to leave early, before they served breakfast. As there would be no shops open and there’s no buffet facilities at the station, we would’ve had to wait until Penzance for breakfast, not ideal really. So we spoke to the ladies at the hotel and they arranged breakfast to be left in our fridge and on trays in our kitchenette. A large coffee cafetière with some ground coffee, microwave porridge, bananas and cereals were left for us. We were able to have breakfast and take coffee and cereal bars with us to enjoy on the train ride down to Penzance. That’s what I call service going the extra mile. Normal breakfast is superb and freshly cooked to order, with quite a few choices including a large and small full English. It’s served in a clean, bright airy room overlooking the railway, sea/sea wall and central Dawlish.
