Hyatt Centric, just about a decade old brand, is mushrooming everywhere in India. As of now there are 12 properties in the country (including ones about to open), which is second only to the US and more than China. The concept is not new, and in Hyatt's own words these hotels would provide "... an experience inside that will serve as a launching pad to exploration outside. Each hotel, located in the heart of interesting destinations, will offer a unique and modern take on its location." That's how most hotels used to be conceived years back when land was still available at prime locales. So, in a way Hyatt Centrics seem to be trying to get back to the hospitality roots, albeit by taking a more posher path. Given that the competing brands are completely missing from the country (read Canopy, Kimpton and likes), I had taken a keen interest in exploring the Centrics. Also, Hyatt Centric Dehradun just happened to be in the city where I was taking a break earlier this month and so I missed no time in booking a 2 nights stay in a King Room with Balcony. With a bit of effort I got connected to Ajit Singh Gandhi their new GM, who was previously in sales with Oberoi who in turn introduced me to Saurabh Gupta their Asst FOM, who was working at an independent resort before. My flight got delayed and I arrived more than an hour later. I had asked the hotel to send a sedan which was a Toyota Yaris. The chauffeur who drove me (Surender) spoke very little but did his job very well. Anyway, Saurabh received me the moment I entered inside and he immediately took me to the room, hauling my suitcase and bags *****, to do the check-in formalities inside the room. He explained a few details of the refurbished hotel as this was a conversion from a Four Points by Sheraton (FPS). Although, he came back immediately after leaving to scan my ID which he had forgotten. As it turned out, I got upgraded to a Deluxe Balcony King room, which was two levels up from my booked category. At almost 370 sq ft the room was larger than their standard rooms but it was also because of the balcony outside. I guess appearance-wise everything in the room was quite muted, perhaps for the kind of colours that were used apart from the mostly white walls and dark wood-panelled floors and furniture. There was just so much space which remained unused. Between the edge of the king bed and the wall where the 55 inch TV was hanging, another king bed would have fit in (yes I measured) with some space still left. In this empty space there was a rug on the floor of such questionable quality that it was already shedding, wi
