I hate leaving bad reviews but feel I have no choice but to do so. First the good things. Friendly but very over worked staff, one guy taking orders, bringing drinks and serving the meals. He still managed to be polite and friendly. The hotel is an old one (built in 1842) and has lots of old world charm. It has been newly decorated in the dining room and our bedroom had nice new carpets. Breakfast was ok the usual choices but only cereal for continental style breakfast, no pastries or choice of bread. We stayed on a Living social deal which was good value. The evening meal choice for those on a deal was very limited ( 2 starters, 3 mains or 3 desserts). Now to my main issue. We stayed 2 nights and the heating and hot water packed in on our first night. We had to get washed with cold water and didn't even attempt a shower. When we asked at reception we were told someone was coming out to fix it that day. We decided to go out for a while hoping that the heating would be on when we returned. No such luck. Our bedroom was freezing. I asked at Reception what was happening and was told it may be the next day before it could be fixed but the manager was trying to do something temporarily. I asked for a heater, but they had all been given out. No one from management was there to speak to guests or explain what was happening. We sat with 2 jumpers, hats and gloves on, before heading out to somewhere else for something to eat and a heat. The locals in the pub we went to were not impressed by the new company running the hotel and said this wasn't the first time it had happened. The next morning nothing had changed, still no hot water and a freezing bedroom and had to boil a kettle to get some hot water to wash. Everyone in the hotel felt the same issues. The hotel is served by a biomass boiler and it was suggested that they had perhaps run out of pellets. There were also a few simple things which would have improved the bathroom/ bedroom. No hairdryer, no tumbler in the bathroom to hold toothbrushes, no shelf or cupboard to put toiletries (had to use top of toilet cistern for these) and no hook in the bathroom to hang your clothes when using the shower. Simple things costing a few pounds which could have upgraded the stay. My main issue was with the lack of communication and management to explain to guests. If I had known that I wouldn't have been able to have a shower or hot water for two days, I would have returned home. I am not of the " compensation culture" but there was no offer of even a free drink never mind the offer of another evenings stay, at a later date, to make up for the inconvenience and hardship suffered.
