Karawan Riad

We were booked for 2 nights at the Karawan Riad by our tour operator. The riad itself was quite beautiful, and our room on the second floor was large. However, as soon as we entered the room, we were bowled over by the strong smells permeating the room. I thought they were using scented candles but there were none. We opened all the windows and even turned on the A/C fans and hoped the scents would diminish but they did not. And there was no escape: the sheets, pillow cases, throw pillows, duvet cover, and towels all had strong perfume-y scents. Likely the laundry soap they use and the products they use to clean the room are heavily scented. There was also a plug-in liquid insecticide in the closet. We spent all night coughing and sneezing and were unable to sleep. My husband’s eyes became horribly bloodshot and swollen. My sinus was totally stopped up. We spoke to the manager the next morning about the situation and was told that there was no other room available; besides, he insisted that our room smelled fine, like all the other rooms in the riad. We contacted our tour operator that we would have to move to another hotel, and we did. He found us a nice room at the Hotel Sahrai, comfortable and no strong scents. The hospitality industry in the U.S. is very aware of scent allergies and does a good job of keeping their facilities as scent-neutral as possible. Strong perfumes and scents are not just annoying but are actually dangerous to people who are allergic to them and should not be dismissed casually. We understand that people in some cultures may be used to, or even love, strong scents but a facility that hosts guests from all over the world should have a better awareness of these issues.

Karawan Riad was a great value. It was the first non-western style accommodation we enjoyed at the beginning of our extended tour of Morocco. Service throughout Morocco is unlike anything you have experienced before. Kerawan Riad was no exception. We strongly recommend it, especially at its current price point.

We had a most amazing stay in Karawan Riad. The staff was truly wonderful and attentive. Karawan riad is a luxurious accommodation in the old town. Truly a wonder to build in the madina with its narrow alleys. Apparently it took 10 years of renovations to get this luxurious perfection. The riad has only 7 suites (no hotel style rooms) so the staff really gets to know individual preferences. We stayed in harmattan suite, with two sleeping and sitting areas, a balcony and a mini library. Really well done. The hamam and massage were world class. Absolutely must for any stay. The common areas, lounges and patios are must to stay and enjoy… especially with a hot tea and snacks.

The place is crazy charming. So much better than photos. The interior decor is modern Moroccan and very classy. Amenities are 5 star. We stayed in unit with a patio which is the highlight. Rooftop views are lovely. Room is large. Highly recommend for couples or families.

As part of our 3 week tour of Morocco, we spent Valentine’s night at Karawan Riad in the Dzhari Suite. We couldn’t have been happier with the choice. Not only was the Riad unique and architecturally interesting, as are so many wonderful accommodations throughout the country, the service and hospitality were outstanding. The location was ideal, and staff were friendly, attentive and welcoming. The dinner and breakfast service were both very good and we thoroughly enjoyed the experience!

You want a cultural trip with a 5 star stay, then Karawan Riad it is. Right in the Medina. It’s a restored historical Riad with a small spa and restaurant. Try the foot trea**ent they offer. After a full day of walking around Fes, Lemiya made the pain go away. Then try their restaurant. For dinner, their chicken Tagine was the best I’ve had in Morocco. Breakfast is another experience you don’t want to miss. Mohammad made our breakfast special this morning. Everybody from the hotel manager to the bell boy are sweet and welcoming. Extremely Clean hotel with cute rooms and zen feeling bathrooms. We loved our stay.

This is a beautiful riad! The location is very convenient, in the best part of the medina but also close enough to the car drop-off. The room was absolutely stunning, from the bed to the room furniture, layout and the bathroom, even the balcony. We had 2 dinners and breakfast here - each meal was very delicious and service was great. They also serve alcohol - so we tried a local beer and wine. We got a hammam here, which was also good - but since it was last minute, they had 1 person for the both of us - which was not ideal.

I loved my time at Karawan. Both Imane and O**ane were very helpful and arranged for a guided tour of the Medina which was amazing. We stayed three nights in the Zephyr Suite and it looked better than the pictures. The breakfast was very good and changed every morning. Dinner was also very tasty and included a choice of dishes from the Moroccan and Mediterranean menus.

Riad Karawan is a beautifully renovated Riad, great location, in the heart of the Medina close to all the shops as well as close to one of the gates - as my first experience at a Riad, I was just so pleasantly surprised to enter this absolutely gorgeous property after passing through a relatively busy market and then taking a turn into a quiet street and knocking on a beautiful door and finding a gorgeous courtyard! We stayed at the Larawan Suite and our friends at the Suhali suite (I think we were supposed to stay at the Suhali and there was some confusion as we checked in earlier). They were both unique in their own ways and had a different style and layout. We shared a lovely outdoor little patio but unfortunately could not enjoy it as it was cold. The reason for the very good rating and not an excellent one was due to the quality of the food which we thought was average specially after visiting other riads and dar's during our travels in Morocco. The 31st eve dinner and entertainment was beautifully planned and executed but the food was average - the attempt to serve a fusion meal was not the best - in addition, menus were not shared with the guests so we had no idea of courses and no one asked us about any dietary restrictions which I highly recommend for a dinner that is required as part of the stay over New Year's Eve! Also, a suggestion to plan something special for the guests who want to stay up and celebrate at 12 midnight - in this case, some of us guests took it upon ourselves to go to the terrace and have champagne! Breakfast was a typical elaborate Moroccan spread along with eggs prepared as requested. I also felt that considering how beautiful the property is, the dining area could be a bit nicer; a suggestion would be to offer dining at the beautiful terrace. We also tried the Hamam at the Riad and that was just an incredible experience. Overall, it was a great experience for first timers in Riads and I would recommend this beautiful property without any reservation.
