This is a beautifully presented and gleamingly clean hotel, with warm and welcoming staff on the front desk. Our room was spacious and comfortable, and there is a satisfying spread of food on offer at the breakfast buffet, with good coffee! We loved the warm indoor pool and the attractive outdoor pool terrace, and also the exceptionally good value half-price 'happy hour' every night in the cosy bar - no miserly half measures of alcohol in the cocktails though - suitably potent! The hotel is a relatively challenging 30 to 40 minute walk uphill from the harbour and downtown area of Funchal, which we relished, but they do offer several scheduled free bus shuttles per day if you'd rather not tackle that by foot. This elevated location rewards handsomely, though, with sensational vistas - panoramic indeed - especially if you have a sea view room with balcony. It was a perfect spot for watching Funchal's spectacular new year's eve fireworks. The only reason we award four instead of the full five stars is for relatively trivial things; our shower wasn't great - though satisfactory - on site parking was a little hit and miss and we were occasionally blocked in, the in-room TV was underwhelmingly small, and we were charged extra for use of the safe, which feels a bit mean spirited, though may well be common practice in these parts. These things certainly wouldn't discourage us from considering staying here again.
