I cannot tell you how disappointed I was at the service and hospitality offered at this supposed 5 star resort! I have travelled extensively in Europe, Africa, Asia, Australia and have never felt as let down as I did here! Firstly, we were informed just a week before departure that the hotel was leaving Fairmont/Allaccor, and rebranding. They would thus not be honouring rewards, status, redemptions, etc. If we wanted to cancel we were given the option - honestly, one week before departure and for a holiday we had been looking forward to for 9 months - I don't think so! In retrospect, we should have cancelled! Upon arrival in Male, we were made to wait 4 hours for the seaplane, a seemingly "invisible" mother and daughter team, whilst obvious "couples" were ushered onto earlier seaplanes. Once we arrived at the resort, there was a pleasant enough greeting and we were assigned a "butler" for the duration of our stay. The only time we needed to use his services was to book a restaurant. He never once checked in on us to see how our stay was going, and wasn't even there to see us off when we left. I'm not sure if there was an actual duty manager, if there was we never saw him/her, despite having several issues that needed to be addressed. The food in Raha Market was generally good but we were left disappointed with their Japanese restaurant, Kata. The service in Raha was excruciatingly slow - we often had to wait 30 minutes for coffee and an omelette in the mornings, even though the resort didn't look a quarter full. At lunch and dinner, staff were wondering around filling up water glasses - surely a simpler solution would be to give people a bottle of water on the table! On the day of departure I asked about the possibility of a late check-out (one of the perks of Allaccor membership), I was told it would cost USD 200 for an extra 2 hours. On principal, I was not going to pay this and chose to use the departure lounge. This was something to behold (see photos). A gloomy room with filthy carpet, mismatched tables and chairs, no water available, only paper cups and dirty glasses, no shower available - totally unacceptable for a 5 star resort! Yes, this is a beautiful resort but, having visited quite a few others in the Maldives, there are so many out there equally as beautiful with top class service and hospitality to match! Indeed, at the end of our stay here we went on to spend 3 nights in Velassaru and the difference in warmth and hospitality was like night and day!
