If you want a more personalized safari experience, I would highly suggest Kapama River Lodge. Not only does it have its own large game reserve with the big five, it is conveniently located very near to the Hoedspruit airport. This ensures that you will be able to start your adventure not long after you land, instead of enduring a 5-6 hour drive when landing at other airports like Johannesburg and Durban. Once we landed, we were greeted by our safari guides, Edwin and Kat, who drove us to the lodge in an open-air safari vehicle. After entering the Kapama game reserve, we were greeted with giraffes, impala, and Cape Buffalo - and this was just on the way to the lodge! Upon arriving at the beautiful lodge, we were greeted by Faith, who gave us a lovely introduction to the all the amenities and activities. She was very knowledgeable and personable, which made us feel very welcomed. After our orientation, she showed us to our fantastic luxury suites with large comfortable beds and huge bathrooms. We had a small, private balcony that overlooked the bush, and was perfect for enjoying an early morning coffee before game drives. Our rooms were located near a quintessential lodge bar, complete with dark wood walls and large, over-stuffed leather chairs and sofas. The bar also had a pool deck with infinity pool, one of three total at the lodge. Our bartenders were wonderful and always friendly. Particularly Respect - who makes fantastic frozen drinks - and Sipho, who always greeted us with a smile and a shot of whiskey before we headed out on our evening game drives. Our safari guides, Edwin and Kat, were truly spectacular. Not only were they extremely knowledgeable about everything we saw (animals, birds, flora and fauna, insects, etc.), but they really went above and beyond to ensure my parents had an unforgettable first safari experience. By our second game drive, we had seen four of the big five and were only missing “the elusive one” (leopard). Knowing it is my favorite animal, they spoke with the other guides to see if one had been sighted. Finally, on our last evening game drive, they drove us to a more forested part of the reserve where a sighting had been reported. Not only were they determined to find this leopard, but they stayed out with us about an hour later than usual to ensure I would see it. And finally, we did! It was an absolutely amazing encounter, but much too short (they don’t call them the “elusive one” for nothing)! Once we lost sight of it, Edwin and Kat agreed to take us out an hour early for our final morning drive the next day to see if we could track and find it again. Sadly, we did not, but we were so appreciative of all their efforts. The food was also some of the best I’ve ever had at a safari lodge. Because lodges know you have to eat all of your meals with them, many won’t take the time or effort to make truly delicious and diverse food. This is not the case with Kapama River Lodge. They not only change their menus dail
