Let me start by saying that I have stayed in different kinds of establishments in many parts of the world: campsites, motels, hostels, hotels, bed and breakfasts.... and slept on a few beaches and deserts too! However, this lodge was one of the best experiences I have had for service, comfort and care. Admittedly, we were extremely lucky to be the only 3 guests during our stay (usual maximum of about 12-14), but I believe that our experience would have been equally as good even with others present. Standards of food and service and the personalities don't change! The chalets are very well presented. There is good attention to detail in the furnishings, colour schemes and provision of tea, coffee and biscuits. There were welcome petals on the bed on arrival. Sheets are turned down at night and chocolates left as if by fairies! There is enough space between each chalet for them to feel private. Each has an outdoor sitting area that is not overlooked. The bathroom was good. The water pressure was a little 'light' however, we are in the middle of a private game reserve in South Africa, one cannot expect to have the kind of pressure you might find in a major city. The outdoor shower with my chalet was great fun, even in the winter. The food requires a whole paragraph. Meals are presented by the fire (boma) in the evenings and in the covered area during the day. The menus are set, so you do not choose for each meal, apart from breakfast. The presentation, quality and portions were perfect for us. The cook has trained locally, but was able to produce food of a quality and standard of many high end restaurants. Her Italian pesto (basil, garlic, pine nuts, olive oil) was one of the best I have eaten, and I have lived in Italy for 25 years. The daily menus were varied, including fish, meat, pasta, rice, sweet potatoes and various local vegetables and fruit. Lee's syrup sponge and vanilla sauce was wonderful, as was her chocolate soufflé. Breakfast was more than enough! Apart from fruit, cereals, toast, juices, tea, coffee etc, a cooked breakfast was offered and appeared in minutes! The cook would also surprise us with a tray of muffins or pancakes too. I rarely, if ever, photograph my food, but here I did! There is an 'honesty' bar, which was extremely well stocked and very reasonably priced. We just wrote down what we drank each day and it appeared on my final invoice. The Alvi's Drift pinotage (wine) is a delight. Now for the important part: the drives. We did the morning and evening drives with Leanne. Each of approximately 3 hours. An early start at about 6am and then another at 4pm. Leanne is the resident ranger, guide, manager... with the most incredible skill and ability when it came to locating wildlife. The radio system between rangers was always alive with Leanne's observations, and understanding of the movement of the wildlife. During our stay she was successful at locating lions, leopards, elephants, buffalo, giraffes and many oth
