Oh that's Magic - Samadhi! Apologies for the late review - it takes leaving Sri Lanka to long for paradise - and few authentic places capture the essence and the magic of our island quite as well as Samadhi Centre. We've been here twice during lockdown and once a few months ago. We didn't participate in yoga - just too busy bathing in nature - quite literally two river baths a day. It's a long trek to our huge apartment, but we needed that after the delicious, healthy and regionally authentic meals - served fresh in clay pots with plenty of jackfruit and other fruit and vegetables from the land around. The owner Waruna is an antiques collector (with a shop in Kandy) so expect time honoured pieces all around the massive property. But in truth - he is an Artist, and his living canvas is this property which has been groomed so beautifully, where the rooms, suites, and little houses blend into the natural landscape - with hints of mischief and sensual add ons. When you keep to a mandate of letting nature thrive, helping it along and asking your guests to appreciate it for all it is, with a complete lack of pretension, it appears what you receive in return is magic - a place that will last all seasons and weather all storms. samadhi is a gift to those who care to visit it - its not trying to be an overpriced yoga retreat spa experience - but yet it offers all of the same without the instant gratification and consumables that 'trend' in today's over-marketed wellness tourism. Samadhi is beautiful, it is serene and peaceful and it is food for the soul. It's the quiet, real life of upcountry Sri Lankans who can still live sustainably and simply and be happier. The cold river swims followed by those breakfast or rice and curry lunch, followed by chilling on the verandas watching nature paint a living, moving canvas of rich greens and wildlife big and small - its the experience that money can't buy. This is truly a Luxury Wellness Retreat, disguised as charming, unassuming niche property upcountry. I suppose it comes down to how you define value or wealth - for me this is it.
