Welikanda Villas was recommended to us by a British owner of another home stay that we have stayed at thrice before. While communicating with Michael (owner of Welikanda Villas), I got an inkling that he did not like being asked if there were going to be power cuts, if the room had a fan or if the washrooms were newly built etc. However, I shrugged it off thinking he may be busy. He took time to respond, and after I followed up a few times, he confirmed reserving a room for 2 nights. On arrival at about 1pm, we were nonchalantly greeted by the owner's wife. We carried our own bags up to our room (one bag was politely carried by the helper), and when the helper opened the door to our room, she realised there was a pool of water from the door of the washroom all the way to the middle of the sitting area. She brought a mop and bucket and proceeded to mop it up. I lightheartedly told her we may need an umbrella to sleep in the room that night, and requested her to inform the owner's wife about the water leak and suggested that another room is allocated in case the roof leaks again, while we occupied it. We went downstairs to have lunch (simple and tasty), and as we were about to finish up, the owner came charging in, all guns blaring, holding like a wrap around loosely around his waist, raising his voice at me, aggressively stating that he had allocated the best room for us (which I readily agreed - but drew his attention to the leak) as he knew we would be fussy, and he doesn't encourage locals to stay at Welikanda as they are difficult to please, and continued to tell me that there was 6 inches of rain the night before, and asking me in a belligerent tone if I do not know how it rains in Sri Lanka and how roofs can leak etc etc. I told him that the maid mopped the floor but I was concerned it could rain that night too, for which he angrily exclaimed that its not the maid but his wife! I contradicted him and told him, it was not his wife who mopped the floor and it was the maid! He left in a huff. If he had an iota of common sense, he should inspect the room prior to the arrival of a guest, especially after heavy rains. If he had any manners, he should have apologized for the water leak, and assured us it won't happen again, or offered us another room without a leaking roof. The next morning he turned up for breakfast and greeted us and we reciprocated politely. On our check out he spoke to us as if he had not had a temper tantrum the day before. I expected an apology at least on departure, yet nothing was said. Hence this one star rating. Welikanda Villas is more suited for backpacking young people who do not mind roughing it out. Definitely not for Sri Lankans - as the owner made it quite clear he did not like to host any locals. Pros - The owner's wife and staff are very friendly and courteous. Food was very good (vegetarian) You get to meet diverse travelers - we met a Canadian, Italian, British, Dutch and ******* The bathroom w
