The slight sense of dismay we felt walking into an entrance littered with mounds of laundry bags increased as we descended a hazardous, grubby stairwell (passing by an unattended pile of (clearly unused) cleaning products) and was then fully confirmed when we entered the room we had booked. As soon as we walked in, we were horrified and knew we couldn’t stay there. While we accepted this was a ‘budget’ booking, there surely exists a basic, acceptable standard of cleanliness and accommodation you can charge for and to say this fell short of that is an understatement. The décor was dismal and dated, the walls were marked, and there were only the most basic of facilities (forget about a kettle, bedside tables or even a headboard). While this could have been acceptable - the hotel was represented online as basic but functional - the reality was appalling. The room was tiny and claustrophobic with a sour odour, the carpet and skirting boards were grimy, dusty and dirty, there was a potentially hazardous wall socket with no face place, wires were hanging down from the back of the TV, there was mould and peeling paint in the bathroom and disgusting gunky black mould in the shower (see photos). The small window, which was open when we walked in, opened out into a littered ground floor parking area with disposed mattresses and other rubbish piled up. The room generally felt unsafe, and we would not have felt secure leaving any belongings there. I can’t comment on the working order of the bathroom or cleanliness of the bedding because we didn’t hang around long enough to find out. The irony of the Post It note which suggested the plastic cup on the table should be used for ‘Tips for the Cleaner’ did not go unnoticed. The only tip I would give them would be to actually clean.
