This chain calls itself a “hostel”, but it is nicer than that. The building itself is old and, I think, The citadel only occupies one floor, so the rest is residential. Yes, the main entrance and hallway are grubby, but the rooms certainly aren’t. I stayed on two occasions and had two different rooms. One was a normal-sized room with a very comfortable double bed, kettle (with tea, coffee, cacao, biscuits), a small fridge, an TV, and a bathroom. The other room was bigger and had all the same things, plus a sofa. And the biggest TV I have ever seen. I actually preferred the smaller room as the bathroom was closer to the bed and the bathroom was a better design. The rooms look like UK Premier Inn rooms without carpet. The location within a residential building means you cannot guarantee quiet – a family lived above one of my rooms and a child was running around for hours. There were also builders in the building opposite. Annoying, yes, but fine considering the price I paid. The citadel is incredibly well situated – you can walk to most places, and it is incredibly close to both “Opera” and “Sol” metro stations, which are on two different lines. I am a woman, was travelling on my own, and felt perfectly safe in the area and the hotel. The only negative is that reception is only open from 2 pm, so leaving luggage there before that time is awkward. Would I go back? Yes, on my own. My husband is a light sleeper, so I would look elsewhere. I would no doubt have to pay more and still wouldn’t be guaranteed peace and quiet.
