We really wanted to stay at this particular hotel due to the ambiance in the photos, the historical feeling and the fact that it was so close to Times Square. THe lobby is beautiful and classic...but the rooms apparantly have been 'renovated' and have now lost the old fashioned classic appeal that they once had. The first room (702) we were given was'renovated' to being painted a stark 'prison' grey with not one picture on the walls; we felt like we were transported to the Hotel 6. Whomever decided to 'renovate' did not understand the importance of artistic aesthetics. The entire feel was dismal. It was so disappointing that we asked if All the rooms were now painted this drab color with absolutely no decor at all (no paintings,no photos on the walls, no wainscoating, no baseboards, no plants, no wallpaper, etc) . I was told Yes, to which i asked why the beautiful photos of all the room choices were not updated to show the new Grey, plain decor? (the photos are absolutely lovely, with goldish papered looking rooms with an old-fashioned appeal). The clerk had no idea why the advertising photos were not updated, it had been a while since all the painting was done. I asked if i could see one more room ; showed us a nice room with a fireplace and a white mantle, (514) which Totally changed the ambiance in the room: it was still solid grey but it gave it at least an old fashioned , classic look, which was greatly appreciated. Just be aware: pics of rooms in ads are not correct!
