This was our fourth or fifth trip to Phuket. Having twice enjoyed Karon Beach in the past, we came back, this time for a longer stay, and we decided to book a condo instead of a hotel room. Since we really needed to rest, we carefully looked for a quiet place. As it was highly recommended as such by most reviews online, we booked a two-bedroom condo at Karon Butterfly (Building F). It is a nice place up a rather steep hill, yet at a close distance from the beach, shops, restaurants and all. Mainly frequented by families, all of them Russian. Although our room was clean on the surface it obviously needed to be more closely looked after. Maintenance appeared to have been on the basic side of the scale. Being not far from anything you might need, unfortunately, the property happens to also be close to the main road, and not far from bars and nightlife. If Patong used to be the place to go for nightlife, it seems to have been spreading to Karon. Adding to that, there were two major construction sites located right next to our building. The condo we booked was thus at more or less 30 meters distance from those construction sites and at more or less 50 meters from the main road and right above the small road leading up to the property. As a result, not only we had to suffer the noises from construction works, (machines, cranes moving above our roof, workers yelling, sometimes on top and above the music they enjoyed listening to while working, etc.) from 8AM to 5PM, 7 days a week, there was also the roaring from the AirCon compressors which were located right next to one of the bedroom’s window, plus the constant humming emanating from the main road down below (remember, Thailand is motorbike country), plus the music from nearby bars going from approximately 9PM until 1-2AM, etc. Even with earplugs, we could hardly get some decent sleep there. It was noise, noise, and more noise most of time, with a slight recess between 3AM and 6AM. Traveling off-peak season, we would have expected to be able to catch up with some sleep on the beach or at the pool; but no. Packed in line like sardines on beach chairs, there was no peace to be had there, and with young kids playing around the pool, it was not much better there. Fortunately, there were a couple of quiet days toward the end of our stay, so we were able to get some rest before going back home. As for Phuket, condos are being built everywhere, Russian money is pouring in; it is becoming both a tourist trap and a hiding place for Russians citizens. We will not return.
