Review of The Tan Hill Inn The Tan Hill Inn sits in an ideal location, blending the charm of the Yorkshire Dales with the rustic beauty that makes for a perfect pub setting. The atmosphere is just right for a cozy, countryside experience; the pub itself is undeniably beautiful with a character that captures the heart of Yorkshire. Unfortunately, this is where the positives end. As professional chefs, my partner and I appreciate well-prepared pub fare, but we were disheartened by the quality of the food at Tan Hill. Our starter of chicken liver parfait was shockingly poor; it arrived with a dry crust, resembling something half-eaten and hastily returned to the fridge. It set a low standard that continued with the chicken wings—one burnt beyond saving and the others a pale, soggy disappointment, as if they had been boiled rather than crisped. The presentation and preparation showed a lack of care, making it clear that no real thought or love was put into the food. With the dismal starters, we decided against ordering mains, ultimately receiving a refund. Though it was a small consolation, the server who assisted us was understanding and gracious. However, our experience with the staff was mixed; the man behind the bar was unnecessarily rude, compounding the disappointment. Furthermore, several items were unavailable on the menu, a detail not mentioned until we attempted to order, only to be met with repeated responses of “not got that.” In summary, The Tan Hill Inn has so much potential given its beautiful setting and ambiance, but the food quality and service need serious attention. Until then, it’s best enjoyed for a drink or two, but don’t bother with the food.
