The good:
- gorgeous, tiny period hotel, only 10 rooms. Rooms were comfortable and nicely-appointed with period furnishings. Coffeemaker and fridge, both big plusses.
- terrific Italian restaurant and bar.
- great location right in the heart of Point Richmond.
The bad:
- management is pitiful, and that's charitable. The hotel is run by a manager who lives in the hotel. We apparently mortally offended her by asking to check in early, although we told her we were OK with waiting if we could drop off our bags.
- a few hours later, when we were able to check in, we used the door code to enter the hotel. We weren't sure where to go (it's not marked), so we asked a housekeeper where the office was. She pointed to a door. We knocked, and the manager opened the door a few inches and said, "This is my personal residence. Why are you here?" I told her we hadn't paid yet. She insisted ******* had paid, and since we had no interest in spending any more time with this person, we left.
- I asked for noon checkout instead of 11, and unsurprisingly got a speech about how this couldn't be done.
- at 11.00am and 3 seconds, the housekeeper knocked. We told her we had called an Uber and would be out soon. Clearly the manager had her knock at exactly 11 to make a point.
She did. We will never return to the Hotel Mac, and will tell anyone who will listen that (1) this is a terrific place and (2) its management is so bad that it's not worth the effort.
