YHA Borrowdale

A great place for walkers to rest over and have some great food. There is a full bar with easy chairs and a well equipped games room. We stayed in a two berth pod which was clean warm and comfortable. The staff were very friendly and chatted with us about our exploits on the fells and crags. Highly recommended

Borrowdale YHA has a very special feel about it. from 6th formers to folks in the eighties, everyone appears to enjoy one anothers company. Being able to park the car and walk from the hostel on so many different walks is lovely. All the staff without exception were very friendly, knowledgeable and helpful. Would highly recommend.

Constant noise from people who showed no consideration to anyone else. Loud conversation and laughter from the bar into the dorms above until well after 2300 that then started up again just after 0500. People who had been drinking all evening and who were up and down to the toilets every few minutes all night. No chance at all of any proper sleep. People staying in a motor caravan outside the front door (YHA Borrowdale allows this) whose dog started barking at 0520. Loud conversation outside our window long before first light. People who bring their dog into the self-catering kitchen and the eating area. A total free-for-all; once YHA has your money you can behave as you wish. And, since you don't have to be a member to stay in a hostel these days, there is absolutely no sanction available. There is absolutely no way I would consider staying in a YHA hostel if I had children. I used to love YHA when it was a member's organisation. These days, it's open to all and sundry, and behaviour is accepted that would not be tolerated in a guest house or B&B, nor by Wardens back in the days before they became 'Hostel Managers' and had targets to meet. I won't be contributing to those targets. I'll use Travelodge instead.

What a great location, this was my first time at Borrowdale and I will be coming back. The hostel was very busy, but the staff managed that and were very helpful in the check in process so as a guest I did not feel rushed. I stayed in a landpod which I thought was very comfortable. The car park was very full but the front desk were great in reassuring me that I had parked in the right place. The only downside was that my shower was cold/luke warm. Which has never happened to before at a YHA

Had a brilliant stay in one of the Camping Pods on site. Superb. Staff very friendly. Great location. Ate at the YHA at night and couldn’t fault it. Really lovely burger for me and pasta my son, good price too. Really really enjoyed our stay. Will 100% return.

I really enjoyed my 2 night stay in this YHA. The staff were all friendly, welcoming and helpful. It’s in a great location, with many walks straight from the doorstep or a local bus ride away. It has a good bar and the food on offer is simple but a good selection and everything you need after a day on the fells. It has a spacious drying room which was very well used due to the amount of rain during the week. The showers are warm, powerful and spacious. I enjoyed my stay and would definitely return. The only improvement I would suggest is my bunk bed was quite creaky when I moved. This wasn’t too much of an issue as I was in a private room but would have been more annoying if I’d been sharing i.e. I wouldn’t have wanted to move as not to wake others up.
