This is the kind of old-fashioned, family-run pensione I used to stay at as a broke student. Pros: Fantastic location, in front of the port, next to Trieste's historic pedestrian quarter, within a 10 minute walk of everything you want to see. Walter, the proprietor, is the world's nicest man, helpful and responsive. Our unit was a spacious apartment with air conditioning. Cons: This is extremely bare-bones – not a hotel, if you're looking for that. There's no lobby; you have to buzz or, more likely, call the owner's cell phone to get let in. The furnishings are extremely spartan. Worst of all, there was no hot water. I remember this from cheap Italian hotels of my youth, but for $150 a night in 2022, I expected hot water. While the place is technically wheelchair accessible, the elevator starts on the second floor, so you have to use a lift device to get up the first set of stairs. It does work, but it's not for everyone.
