The staff at this hotel are great, always helpful and friendly and the talented barman is wasted at this venue. Situated high on the hillside over the bay of Tropea, the hotel does benefit of an amazing view over the sea with the island of Stromboli clearly visible in the distance. The terrace is a lovely place to be for sunset drinks. However, be aware that the marketing pictures on the hotel’s website don’t truly reflect the reality of the style and finish of the property. The hotel décor, although clean, is dated and tired, with a number of items in the room requiring maintenance – or at the very least attention to detail – and the bathroom was tiny. The hotel is situated in a rundown residential district about 15mins walk to the more picturesque centre of Tropea. Some of the adjoining buildings appear to have fallen on hard times with cracked and fallen masonry – all adding to the general decline of the hotel’s surroundings. The swimming pool pictures on the hotel’s website were taken with a wide-angle lens, the reality is nothing more than a tired plunge pool. The bar and breakfast lounge is not particularly inviting. Ironically the quaintest part of the hotel is its wine cellar, but it appears to be seldom used and we were told that wine tastings were not available, which was a waste of an opportunity. The hotel’s individual faults in themselves do not make it bad place, but collectively measured against the marketing pictures, they need to be highlighted; particularly given that this was the most expensive hotel we stayed in during our 8-day road trip and all the other places we stayed were better. With a refurbishment (to make it look like the contemporary styled property the website would have you believe it is) this could be gem of a hotel.
