Hotel Ipanema

Great location, very old-fashioned decor and a bit drab. Breakfast wasn’t the best but all in all the rooms are okay and it’s very easy walk to the cable cart

The private beach club was closed because is not the season, but the location is superb and every room is with the little balcony. Didn’t get the best one but is worth the price.

Lovely, slightly old fashioned hotel. Rooms were large enough, clean and tidy, though could do with brighter lighting. Breakfast was great. Staff excellent, friendly and helpful. Hotel could do with a little updating, but was comfortable and a great location for Taormina, the beach and sightseeing. Use the local busses, good value, and the trains for longer trips, again good value. Taxis are expensive. Recommend a tour up Etna (we used GoEtna which were great, but there are others in the area) - choose a clear day and the views are amazing.

The hotel was very lovely. Room was clean and cozy. The location was great. Breakfast was good. Christine and Maria at the reception were so nice and helpful. And all of the staff were very kind and polite. When we come back to Taormina (hopefully soon) we will defenitly stay at Ipanema Hotel again. Grazie mille!

Great service and they totally saved my bacon !! Flight cancelled by Easynet and I could have been sleeping on the beach if it wasn't for them. Christina is a great host and i highly recommend this hotel. They have a great team and really good food !! Thank you for looking after me - and the roof pool is awesome x

Pros Very clean All staff are very friendly Cons Breakfast is a very basic buffet, and it is the same every day. Nothing hot. Everything out of packets! Hotel pool on rooftop, only about 8 sunbeds. Not enough space for more Larger sun terrace but again not enough sun.beds (about 8), and some were broken Some photos show the lido, but this means a minibus shuttle & costs 12euros each. A few reasonable restaurants within walking distance olong a very busy road. Alternatively, use the cable car to Taormina (10 euros return), or bus (3.80 euros return) Isola Bella within walking distance but nothing else really. You will spend a lot of money to get anywhere from this hotel.

We really enjoyed our stay here. Some of the negative comments are unbelievable. Before going to the Taormina area, you have to appreciate that there are two parts. The old town of Taormina is up on a mountain, the part by the sea is Mazzaro. The hotel is in Mazzaro. Taormina itself gets very busy and fairly expensive but nothing can take away from the charm of the place and it's great in the evening. I have been several times but my wife never. Especially if you do want some beach, Mazzaro is the better bet to stay. The Ipanema is ideally located near the funicular to get into town and close to the beautiful Isola Bella. Free but crowded beach. We had a warm welcome and our room was on the 3rd floor with a little balcony and a fabulous view of the bay. Yes the hotel is near the road but set back and in the evening is really peaceful. The aircon worked so well we had to turn it right down! Ample wardrobe space for two with a huge quantity of hangers. Lovely bath/shower in a nice sized bathroom. The bed was really comfortable and was impeccably made every day and the sheets seemed to be changed often. We had an issue with no signal on the modern TV but the hotel promptly put that right. We had a fridge but it more stopped cooled drinks from getting warm rather than cooling them. Apparently it was a remnant of a mini bar which they are withdrawing. I do hope they keep the fridges going. On the 5th floor there is a roof top solarium (baking) and up some steps a pleasant pool but limited lounging space. It would be nice though if they replaced a couple of the tiles on the side of and in the pool. There is a lovely courtyard outside with comfortable seating to have an after dinner drink from the reasonable bar. The hotel also has its own paid for (inc shuttle bus) private beach club with loungers very pleasant pool, tennis court and a snack bar. The restaurant was closed. There is also an underground car park. The food in the hotel was amazing. Always a choice of 4 starters always a Sicilian pasta dish (huge), risotto or a soup. Choice of mains different every day, fish or meat with vegetables. Oddly they always had an 'English' type dish like egg and chips. (Why in this day and age). The desserts were on a big table, a sort of cake (actually mousse like) water melon (wonderful) fresh fruit salad and I think a sort of creme caramel. Sometimes there were two 'cakes'; it changed every day. One evening they had Connoli and we made the big mistake of not choosing that as we thought it was cream. No. It's a typical Sicilian Patisserie stuffed with sweet ricotta. Sublime. My Sicilian friend ordered some little ones in a restaurant. On Saturday they had a gigantic buffet. Absolutely enormous. The staff are all lovely. The waiters are trained to a high standard and are really friendly. We watched fascinated while Vincenzo or Mario took an entire fish and filleted it in front of us. The room pros: - The room is very clean. Every morning the cleaning ladies make up your bed and restock your towels and shampoo. - The balcony has a very nice view. We chose for a sea side view. - The interior looks nice and has an old style. Keep in mind 4 star hotels are different in east/south europe. - The room is equipped with a fridge - The room has AC which works very well. In just a few minutes the room cools down completely. - The room is quiet at night (except for the water flushing) cons: - You can hear the water from the toilet from the room above yours very loudly when it flushes. For people with sleeping problems this might be a deal breaker. It woke me up a couple of times but i had no problem going back to sleep. - The hair dryer gets really hot to hold after a few minutes. So i recommend you bring your own. The service pros: - It has a 24h reception - The receptionists speak excellent English. - The receptionists are really helpful and very friendly cons: - Location pros: - The location is perfect if you’re looking for a beach vacation - One minute walk away from the hotel you will find the cable car to the city centre. Costs: 6 euro per person one way, 10 euro per person two way. - There are a few nice restaurants close to the hotel - The hotel has a private beach. A shuttle bus will take you there and pick you up. Shuttle bus runs til 17:30. Costs are 6 euros. - There is a pharmacy close to the hotel cons: - The location is not really walkable. As both ways will lead you to a car road. - If you’re looking for a city sight seeing holiday it’s best to book a hotel in the city centre - The cable car is insanely busy during dinner hours, with waiting times around an hour / 30 mins. Taking a taxi will cost you 20 euros one way. - Not many shops around the hotel. As someone who’s luggage got lost at the hotel, i had a VERY hard time shopping for clothes for a reasonable price. The private beach pros: - You can choose to relax at the pool next to the beach, or go to the actual beach. - The beach is not busy, the perfect amount of visitors. - The beach club has a bar (next to the pool) and a restaurant. The restaurant closes at 15:30. If you want to eat after closing time there’s a restaurant at the other beach, where you can eat some delicious food. cons: - There’s loud music at the pool - At the beach you will be bothered by people trying to sell their stuff. In one day at the beach people came up to us 10 times. - There aren’t any shops at the beach. As someone who is used to be able to buy everything at the beach or grab a quick lunch, this was something i really missed. So i recommend you bring your own snacks. The breakfast pros: - The breakfast was good. Nothing special. - The workers are friendly. cons: - I wish there was warm food like scrambled eggs - The room looks empty and yellow. - It’s the same food every day.
