"I rarely leave negative reviews, but this was one of the most disappointing hotel experiences I have had in Japan. I booked a Run of House (ROH) room for my family. The booking description stated that room sizes range from 28 to 38 square meters. Based on that description, I reasonably expected that room assignments would be allocated fairly within that range. Upon check-in, I initially asked whether it would be possible to have a room facing Huis Ten Bosch. I fully understood when I was told that a park-facing room would require an additional charge, as such rooms are often sold at a premium. However, after entering the room, I realized that I had been assigned what appeared to be the smallest and least desirable room available. At that point, I was no longer asking for a park view. I simply asked whether it would be possible to have a slightly larger room, especially since the ROH description clearly stated that room sizes range from 28 to 38 square meters. What made the experience particularly frustrating was that I had already read reviews from other guests who booked the same ROH category and received significantly better rooms. One guest mentioned being assigned a park-view room after making a request, while another guest appeared to have received one of the hotel’s best room categories despite booking ROH. When I politely asked why other guests with the same booking category seemed to receive much better room assignments while I was given the smallest room available, the front desk was unable to provide a clear explanation. Instead, I was repeatedly told that any room change would require an upgrade fee. At one point, I was even told to contact the booking platform and ask the platform to pay for the room change. This response made very little sense. I was not asking for a free upgrade. I was simply asking for transparency and consistency regarding how ROH rooms are allocated. After a lengthy discussion, the hotel eventually moved us to a slightly larger room. However, the replacement room was located on the lowest floor, at the far end of the corridor, with a partially obstructed theme park view. While I appreciated the effort, it reinforced the impression that alternative rooms were available, yet no clear explanation was ever provided regarding the original room assignment. My disappointment is not that I did not receive the best room. I fully understand that ROH bookings do not guarantee upgrades. My concern is that the hotel advertises a room size range of 28–38 square meters, creating the expectation that room assignments may reasonably vary within that range. If ROH guests are always assigned the smallest and least desirable room available, even when larger rooms remain vacant, then the hotel should simply advertise the room as 28 square meters. That would allow guests to make an informed decision before booking. For families travelling with children, room size matters. Had the listing clearly indicated that ROH guests would receive a 28-square-meter room, I would likely have selected a different room category from the beginning. The hotel itself is in a convenient location and the facilities are generally good. However, the handling of this situation left a very negative impression. Based on this experience, I would strongly recommend booking a specific room category rather than ROH, so that expectations are clear from the outset."

"Unzen Kyushu Hot Spring Hotel is located in the center of Unzen Hell. You can see the scenery of hell very clearly from the room. The hotel does not have a public hot spring, and each room has a private hot spring. It is really pleasant to take a bath while watching the scenery of hell. The rooms are large and well-equipped. The hotel provides free afternoon tea, coffee and other drinks on the second and fifth floors after 3:00 p.m. I booked a one night stay and two nights package, so breakfast and dinner should be ok."

"When checking in, the room we had reserved was far from the elevator, so we informed them that my elderly mother was with us, and they promptly changed our room to one closer to the elevator. They also provided a wheelchair during our stay, which made getting around the hotel easy. Above all, the food was excellent. Great value for money. The only downside was that it would have been nice to have a coffee dripper in the room. As someone who has a habit of drinking coffee first thing in the morning, it was inconvenient. There were some rather bossy-looking older staff members standing at the hotel entrance and in the lobby, but they offered absolutely no assistance with check-in, check-out, or loading/unloading luggage. What were they even there for? I think helping with loading and unloading luggage should be a given. Otherwise, the bathroom, cleanliness, and everything else was fine, so I would recommend it to others. Please improve the service of providing coffee in the rooms and assistance with loading and unloading luggage."

"If you wish to visit Huis Ten Bosch and stay there overnight, I would highly recommend this hotel. It is walking distance from the Huis Ten Bosch train station and to the theme park. You can arrive in the morning, store your luggage, enter the theme park and spend the whole day there before checking in at night. The room is spacious and clean for me. However, I would say that there are no walking distance convenience stores if you are feeling hungry at night and wish to have some food or snacks. I only stayed there for one night and for the price I paid, I am satisfied with my stay there."

"A pretty good hotel overall, but the hot spring management was a bit chaotic. There were a few ********* kids splashing around in the hot spring, which really ruined the experience. Other than that, the hotel was excellent, especially the value for money of the buffet, particularly dinner."

Due to its proximity to nature, you might occasionally encounter a few insects in the rooms, but the hotel is generally clean and well-maintained. It boasts a wide array of recreational facilities, along with services such as restaurants, hot springs, and massages. The pricing is reasonable, offering good value for money, so you can easily spend a full and enjoyable vacation without leaving the hotel. I highly recommend it for families looking for a relaxing getaway!"

"Beautiful traditional Ryokan, my room got both indoor and outdoor private onsen, the hotel is hidden in a forest hence super quiet and serene. Farm to table meals is a surprise; the inn have lands for rice crops, self grown mushrooms, and stable for goat and chickens. Lovely staff and good value for price."

"I chose this hotel because it's near the Kujukushima sightseeing boat area, and even though the existing reviews aren't great, it was a pleasant surprise, and I highly recommend it. First, there's a shuttle bus to the hotel. There's no timetable on Ctrip, but it's much faster and easier than public transportation. Before 8 PM, wait at the bus stop to the left after exiting the west gate of Sasebo Station. After 8 PM, go to the bus stop outside the east gate. The minibus has the hotel name posted on the window; you have to find it yourself. The hotel receptionist's English is so-so. I booked a tatami room, which was indeed quite old, but it was spacious—the only 22-square-meter room I stayed in during this trip for the price of a budget hotel. There were only electrical outlets for the TV and refrigerator. The hotel has a natural hot spring bath. Free drinks are usually available in the lobby, self-service from machines."

"The senior staff member who assisted us was incredibly charming and friendly, completely belying their age. Our tatami room with a comfortable bed was spotlessly clean. The breakfast, in particular, was a traditional Japanese meal, beautifully presented and absolutely delicious. They even gave us an eco-bag as a souvenir, which I'll definitely put to good use. When I mentioned wanting to return if the opportunity arose, they responded with a radiant smile, warmly inviting us back."
